Automatic synthesis of membership functions for the force control of turning operations

Abstract It is well known that membership functions have a great influence on the control performance of fuzzy logic controllers. In this paper, an automatic synthesis of membership functions based on genetic algorithms is proposed to control non-linear and time-varying turning processes with constant cutting forces. It is shown that optimal membership functions for the control of turning processes can be obtained through the genetic approach. The effectiveness of this study on the control of turning operations is shown by computer simulation and experimental verification.
