An Independent Perspective on the Human Genome Project

The Human Genome Project is occurring on a scale unprecedented for the biological sciences. As a way of providing a fresh, "outsider's" view of the central issues and problems, the Department of Energy asked the JASON group to look at present-day sequencing technology and possibilities for the future, quality assurance and control (QA/QC) issues relevant to sequencing, and informatics. There is a clear need for coordination and improvements in all areas if the project is to meet its goal of a complete human sequence by 2005.
