Automated Generation of Scenes Based on DLMS (Digital Land Mass System) Data Base

Abstract : This draft technical report is prepared for the U.S. Army Tank Automotive Command under contract DAAE07-86-C-R123. The report details the work undertaken at George Mason University under sub-contract from Wayne State University. For effective utilization of the Vetronics Crew Display Demonstrator it is essential to be able to generate a number of realistic missions. This report presents a methodology to build an automated system to generate the missions. The primary goal of this research project is to develop a methodology that will enable the use of geographic databases for constructing scenarios for the VCDD. In our analysis we have focussed on two Defense Mapping Agency databases - elevation database (DTED) and features database, Digital Feature Analysis Data (DFAD). The Vetronics Crew Display Demonstrator has been recently completed. Although some additional work is being done on the system, the current configuration is adequate to perform test and simulations. It is recalled, that one of the major motivations of the VCDD was to provide a tool for testing alternative configurations for tanks and vehicles of the future. Given the current status of the VCDD development it is worthwhile to explore the means to be adopted to generate the test missions. The purpose of this report is to explore this issue.
