This communication describes an empirical study into the extent to which criticism of the peer review process in justified, and uses as an example manuscript reviews carried out for this journal, Angewandte Chemie. At the heart of the study are the three criteria for professional judgment: inter referee agreement (reliability), fairness, and predictive validity (as measured by mean citation) frequencies for accepted manuscripts and rejected manuscripts later published elsewhere
