Chatter vibration of flexible multibody machine tool mechanisms

Abstract This investigation is concerned with the nonlinear vibration analysis of machine tool mechanisms using the finite-element method. The dynamic response of the machine tool mechanism has been analyzed during the application of a constant cutting force that depends on the chip cross-sectional area and shear strength of the workpiece materials, as well as during the application of the chattering force which depends on the relative displacement of the tip point of the tool as well as its first-time derivative. The cutting tool and elastic components in the system are discretized using the finite-element method and both bending and axial deformation are considered. A case study of a crank shaper (quick-return) mechanism is presented in order to examplify the formulation developed.
