Liver transplantation for hepatocellular carcinoma

Hepatocellular carcinoma is a malignant tumor that constitutes over 80% of liver neoplasms. It is usually associated with cirrhosis and seems to originate as a result of a multistep and multifocal process. One of the main confounding factors associated with the treatment of HCC is the underlying degree of liver damage. Although previous studies observed that transplantation was beneficial for cirrhotics with small tumors (up to 5 cm if solitary or 3 cm if multiple), no more than three nodules, and no vascular involvement, a recent series shows that these criteria could be expanded. Live donor transplantation, domino transplantation, and graft-in-waiting resection have emerged as additional ways of treatment. Histologic grade was shown to have a negative impact on survival.
