Formation of Double Hydroxides and the Titration of Clays.

The buffering region above pH 7.0 and below the pH at which Mlg(OH)/sub 2/ precipitation is expected, revealed in the titration curve for MgO added to Al/ sup 3+/-saturated Wyoming bentonite in a dilute salt solution, is discussed. It is indlcated that double hydroxides are formed in the clay suspensions, causing the buffering region. (L.N.N.)
