Effect of Rudder Size and Location on the Turning Performance of a High Speed SWATH Ferry

Abstract This paper provides a short survey about SWATH vessel turning performance. The theoretical method linearly approximates and uses semi-empirical expressions of manoeuvring derivatives for mono-hull vessels. This is justifiable since the SWATH is symmetrical. The program incorporates this method and determines the rudder size for a SWATH vessel and estimates the turning performance. This program can be easily interfaced with many commercially available ship manoeuvring simulators. This work forms part of the European Commission funded SPIN-HSV research project to study the improvement of high-speed maritime transport.
