Recent Advances in Studies of Bird Migration

During the past decade, studies on avian migration have made substantial progress through both field work and experimental research. After 90 years of extensive bird banding (introduced by the Vogelwarte Rossitten in 1901116), the descriptive study of avian migration recently acquired an important new dimension: virtually permanent recording of migratory flights by satellite tracking (52, 72, 92). Due to the novelty of this approach, a review devoted to this subject would be premature; however, several other current topics require an overview. We have selected six themes which, in our opinion, are currently developing rapidly and stimulating great interest. First, the task of selectively breeding migrant passerines has been perfected to the degree that large numbers of migrants have now been bred in aviaries. This achievement has resulted in substantial advances in our understanding of
