Abstract Engine designers are continually in searh of new or alternative materials which can be used to improve engine performance, reduce power unit weight and volume, increase durability and lower manufacturing costs. Ceramics is one group of materials which has received considerable attention from engine designers in recent years. This article reviews some of the work carried out applying ceramics to reciprocating internal combustion engines. The main conclusion is that whilst there is a steady increase in use of ceramics in components, evolution rather than revolution will occur in engine design to take best advantage of their properties as these are steadily improved.
