Editorial: Driving the future of engineering and medicine

The rapid growth of the biomedical engineering field presents researchers with both unique challenges and opportunities. At the same time, an increasing number of journals are in development by various publishers. A question that may arise is how we should distinguish TBME from the ever growing number of journals while maintaining the status of TBME as the leading platform for publications in biomedical engineering. It is argued that the mission of TBME should be to publish significant comprehensive research that integrates engineering with biomedicine. Topics shall include, but are not limited to, the following: biomedical signal processing, biomedical imaging and image processing, bioinstrumentation, biosensors, micro/ nanobiotechnology, bioinformatics and computational biology, biomedical modeling and computing, cardiovascular engineering, neural and rehabilitation engineering, cellular and tissue engineering and biomaterials, biomechanics, robotics, therapeutic and diagnostic systems, devices and technologies, clinical engineering, healthcare information systems and telemedicine, and emerging topics in biomedical engineering. Given this broad spectrum of topics within biomedical engineering, TBME should aim to be the journal to publish in the field of biomedical engineering. TBME should publish the highest quality scientific works that make significant advancements in conceptualization of the field of biomedical engineering. Incremental improvements in an existing research area should not be TBME's focus. To reach maximum impact, the presentations should be oriented at general readership in the biomedical engineering community.While mathematical proofs and formulas are essential for demonstrating theoretical concepts, only key equations central to the meaning of the work should be presented. Detailed derivation should be moved to the appendix or be submitted to more technically specialized journals.
