IV Instruments for the Measuring of Optical Transfer Functions

Publisher Summary This chapter reviews the methods for measuring optical transfer function (OTF) of optical systems in accordance with the classification based on the underlying principles. To apply these methods for practical use in laboratories or in factories, the accuracy of and the time required for the measurement come into question. If high accuracy of the measurement is desired, the instrument becomes more complicated and the time required for a measurement becomes longer. On the other hand, if the time required for a measurement is desired to be shorter, the accuracy of measurement becomes poorer. The accuracy of the measurement is affected by various elements, especially, optically by the shape distortion of the sinusoidal grating, electro-optically by the linearity of the photodetector, and electrically by the stability and the signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio of the amplifier and the frequency response of the recorder. The error tolerance of the measurement may be 3% for instruments tested in laboratories and 5% for instruments tested in factories. All measurements of OTF include the operations for setting of the lens at a condition to be tested, normalizing of the modulus and phase of OTF, measuring of OTF, and recording of the results.
