Phase Diagram and Impedance Spectroscopy Study of the La0.5+x−yBiyLi0.5−3xTiO3 System

The phase diagram of the system Li2O/La2O3/TiO2/Bi2O3 has been studied. Using powder X-ray diffraction, five distinct areas have been found in the triangle Bi0.5Li0.5TiO3/La2/3TiO3/La0.5Li0.5TiO3. A region of perovskite-like solid solutions was obtained when the bismuth content in the general formula La0.5+x−yBiyLi0.5−3xTiO3 was less than y = 0.10. Two two-phase regions, one of them consisting of a perovskite-like phase and La2Ti2O7, and the other a perovskite-like phase and Li2TiO3, were obtained. One four-phase region, consisting of a perovskite-like phase, Li2TiO3, Bi4Ti3O12 and La4Ti3O12, was also obtained. The fifth area corresponds to the melting of the initial mixtures. The microstructures of these phases were studied by SEM/EDS. The compounds of general formula La0.5+x−yBiyLi0.5−3xTiO3 are ionic conductors. Their ionic conductivity increases when the amount of lithium rises up to x = 0.075, and decreases when the amount of bismuth increases. (© Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH, 69451 Weinheim, Germany, 2002)
