Review of Instrumentation for Superconducting Magnets

A survey of sensors commonly applied to monitor superconducting magnets is presented. An attempt is made to compile available data on the useful range, accuracy and reliability of these sensors. Next, the control philosophy in some representative superconducting magnet systems is described, including the instrumentation utilized. The representative examples are taken from the broad field of large magnets used in accelerators, fusion reactors and for energy storage. Merits of the different control systems applied are reviewed, including information on operational experience. Finally, desirable developments of magnet instrumentation and control philosophy are discussed.
