THE CURRENT PRACTICES OF SUSTAINABLE HOUSING DEVELOPMENT MECHANISMS

Due to the depletion of flat land plus other accentuating elements and the Malaysian vision 2020, housing development on the terrace hillside has been aggravated substantially in an attempt to reach fully developed nation. However, rapid terrace development caused many disasters as landslides which resulted into colossal loss of resources and damages to life and property. Malaysian law supports housing development, but guide and control same, but yet, eventualities still occur. Sustainable housing development on the terrace is necessary for meeting housing demands, beautiful scenery, free access to fresh air, exclusiveness, etc. This paper seeks to review theoretical framework for the attainment of sustainable housing development. Methodology shall involve definition of sustainable development, elements and characteristics of sustainable housing development, indicators for measuring sustainable housing development, Malaysian approach to sustainable housing development, etc. For a viable and sustainable housing development, the paper will peruse literatures and accommodate all key actors in the housing industry. Effective measurement of sustainability should be considered which will encompass the absolute bottom line of environmental performance, social and economic indicators all of which are interwoven and dependent on each other.
