ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY APPLICATION: THE "SMART" DIAMOND

By focusing in on discrete components of the roadway network, technology can be applied in a controlled section of the network that is large enough to show quantifiable benefits to users. In this project, a diamond interchange was selected to demonstrate the viability of real-time optimization that incorporates several emerging technologies and Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) concepts. Applied here, these concepts translate into the automation of a process for collecting real-time traffic data, storing the information, optimizing the interchange both temporally and spatially for the current traffic demand, and carrying out the desired solution.
