Vascular Biometric Systems And Their Security Evaluation

When considering Biometrics for a Personal Identification System, different modalities have to be considered, as to choose the one that best fits the particular Application Requirements. From the several modalities existing nowadays, Vascular systems have appeared in scene lately. Vein-based identification is claimed to be as reliable as fingerprint or iris, but with the usability of hand geometry or even face. But as any other biometric modalities, Vascular solutions have to be deeply analyzed for all relevant factors than could affect their performance or the security level achieved. This paper will give an overview to the palm-based biometrics, in order to introduce the reader to the work done by the authors in analyzing the performance and security achieved by these solutions in several real-world scenarios. Results will show the strengths of this modality, as well as those points where further improvements are needed.
