Algorithms in Organizations: Interactions with (and via) Technology

Technology is changing modern organizations. As “big datax and algorithms become more commonplace at work, people are increasingly forced to choose whether and how to utilize technological systems. In this symposium, four presentations explore the social and cognitive effects of the rise of the algorithm in today's digital age. In doing so, we speak to how and when people rely on recommender systems, how people react to organizations utilizing algorithms to inform important decisions, and how technology shapes social interaction and information sharing. Taken together, this research suggests that people's interactions with (and via) technological agents do not necessarily mirror their interactions with human agents.
