The Absence of Lipid Peroxidation in Human Red Cells Exposed to Acetylphenylhydrazine

Summary. The membrane lipids from human red cells which had been treated with acetylphenylhydrazine were examined for evidence of autoxidation. Malonyldialdehyde production was measured and the lipids were extracted and examined by thin‐layer chromatography. No lipid autoxidation was detected by either method, even when the cellular haemoglobin was considerably oxidized. In addition, the susceptibility of red‐cell lipids to autoxidation by hydrogen peroxide did not increase if the cells were prcincubated with APH. The significance of these results is discussed in relation to the mechanism of haemolysis in Heinz‐body haemolytic anaemias.
