Design and simulation of a dual frequecy E-shaped Microstrip patch antenna for wireless communication

A low profile, dual frequency probe-fed Microstrip antenna with E-shape radiating patch is designed and proposed for S-band and C-band applications. The purpose of this work is to obtain a dual frequency antenna with high gain and less return loss at the intended frequencies. The operating frequencies of the proposed antenna are 3.51 GHz and 5.82 GHz which are suitable for wider band of frequencies such as WiMAX, ISM, cell-phones and further commercial applications. At First a rectangular Microstrip Patch Antenna for 3.5 GHz is designed. Then the patch is converted into E-shape with a view to reducing the return loss and obtaining another operating frequency for dual frequency operation. To do so, the slot widths between the arms of E-shaped patch are varied in sequence. The simulation is performed using the GEMS, a commercially available antenna simulator. The dielectric substrate used in this case is Taconic TLY-5 dielectric having permittivity 2.2 and height, H=1.588 mm. The minimum return loss obtained at 3.51 GHz is -21.4 dB and that at 5.82 GHz is -43.2 dB.
