Based on deflection theory, the differential equations, describing the relationships between the deformation and load of stiffening girders of self-anchored suspension bridges subject to dead load or live load,or both of these two loads, were built.By analyzing the equations, the following conclusions were obtained: it is important to check the main plane stability according to the state of the compression-bend beam under transverse load in order to design stiffening girders of self-anchored suspension bridge under dead load. However,it is not necessary to verify the stability character of the main plane in cable-suspended section under live load. Moreover, the view point that the static characteristics of self-anchored suspension bridges may be a match of truss whose height changes continuously, was concluded. The bridge test model was built to analyze the ultimate carrying capacity of the real bridge, and the over load test of self-anchored suspension bridges was carried out.And the results have verified the theory and its conclusion.
