Optimal frame design with discrete members using the complex method

A general purpose automated design procedure, based on a modified complex method of Box, for the optimal design of plane frames with variable geometry (joint locations) and discrete member size, selected from specified tables of member cross-sections, is presented. Members are sized on the basis of allowable stress design procedure, and the design satisfies all the relevant provisions of the AISC Specification. The computer program allows the linking of members as well as joints. The capabilities of the method are illustrated by three examples.
