V Pneumatization of the Temporal Bone

A classification of pneumatization of the temporal bone has been developed by integrating the findings from specimens available at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary with the observations and interpretations of other investigators.l" The extent and arrangement of the air cells varies widely, from a minimal air cell system to involvement of most of the temporal bone. We have divided this system into 1) Mastoid Pneumatization, 2) Petrous Pneumatization, and 3) Accessory Pneumatization (extending beyond the limits of the mastoid and petrous regions).
