The Principle of 3D Camera Imaging

Acquiring 3D geometric information from real environments is an essential task for many applications in computer graphics and computer vision. It is obvious that lots of application can be benefit from simple and accurate devices for real-time range image acquisition. However, even for static scenes there is no low-price off-the shelf system can provide full-range, high resolution distance information in real time. Time-of-Flight (ToF) technology, based on measuring the time that light emitted by an illumination unit requires to travel to an object and back to a detector, is the basis for the development of new range-sensing devices, so-called ToF cameras, which are realized in standard CMOS or CCD technology. A ToF camera will be introduced in this chapter for acquiring 3D face images.
