Do Exertion Interfaces Provide Better Exercise Environments

An Exertion Interface is an interface that deliberately requires intense physical effort. With Exertion Interface applications, researchers explore diverse new possibilities to extend regular exercise equipment. Within this document five Exertion Interface applications are described to illustrate the definition to the reader. The supposed advantages of Exertion Interface applications and the actual opinions of the users are compared with each other. Because there aren’t many objective user studies conducted or published yet, not all of the supposed advantages assumed by the designers can be checked. Although there isn’t as much information available as would be desirable, an overall conclusion is formulated based on the previous mentioned comparison. This conclusion uses the user study material that is available to make clear whether Exertion Interface applications are worth the effort and whether they add something to the established way of exercise at this point in their development.
