Challenges of Power Systems

Abstract In recent years feed-in from renewable energy sources has increased while at the same time more and more thermal generation units have been decommissioned. As a result, ensuring a secure and reliable operation of power systems has become a challenging task. Storage systems can play an important role in the integration of renewable energy sources into power systems. Depending on the system structure and organization, energy storage can either provide an alternative to grid extension or may represent additional degrees of freedom that can be used by the system operator. In this context, demand-side management offers an alternative to typical storage systems by influencing the timeline of the load. From the power system point of view, storage technologies are of special interest to provide system services. Therefore, the technical requirements to be fulfilled for reserve provision have to be analyzed.
