Extension of Onboard Navigation Systems by Hybrid Functionality

Onboard navigation systems are an essential feature in vehicles, which compete more and more with mobile navigation solutions. One main advantage of onboard systems is their integration into in- vehicle MMI. Nevertheless, the flexibility of onboard systems is correlated to the development cycles of vehicles. In order to develop onboard navigation systems with high flexibility and additional, user-defined features, one needs the possibility of extending onboard navigation systems by hybrid functions. This includes the necessity of standardized interfaces and mobile communication facilities. The paper introduces into the problems and possibilities of hybrid functions of navigation systems. Some use cases illustrate the flexibility of such systems.
