A BUREAU OF INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING WAS ESTABLISHED IN NEW JERSEY IN OCTOBER, 1964. THE MISSION OF THE BUREAU WAS TO PLAN, DIRECT, AND SUPERVISE INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING PRACTICES IN THE ANALYSES OF WORK, THE DEVELOPMENT OF METHODS IMPROVEMENTS, THE ESTABLISHMENT AND APPLICATION OF WORK STANDARDS, THE STANDARIZATION OF METHODS AND PROCEDURES, AND THE DEVELOPMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION OF COST CONTROL TECHNIQUE, TO INSURE THE OPTIMUM UTILIZATION OF THE MANPOWER, FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT OF THE VARIOUS DIVISIONS AND BUREAUS OF THE STATE HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT. BETTER MANPOWER AND EQUIPMENT UTILIZATION WAS THE OBJECT OF PLANS TO DEVELOP SCHEDULING SYSTEMS FOR BOTH ROADWAY MAINTENANCE AND EQUIPMENT SUPERVISOR. THE CHIEF ACCOMPLISHMENT OF THE INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING STAFF HAS BEEN TO GIVE THE FOREMEN AND SUPERVISORS A GOAL IN PLANNING AND SCHEDULING. A PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE PROGRAM HAS BEEN INSTITUTED THAT SEEMS TO BE WORKING SMOOTHLY. THE COMPUTER CENTER IS DEVELOPING PLANNING AND SCHEDULING AND WORK ORDER PROGRAMS. THE COMBINATION OF MAINTENANCE EXPERIENCE WITH INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING SHOULD PRODUCE BETTER MAINTENANCE OPERATIONS.
