Address by the embassador for the environment, Sir Ninian Stephen: Environment in crisis - engineers; from heroic conquest to integrated solutions

In 1984 I was asked, and with much trepidation accepted the invitation, to deliver the second Ian McLennan oration to an audience of engineers at Melbourne University. Trepidation because, although i had profited while a barrister as a result of defective runways, suspect railway culverts and collapsing bridges, in which Melbourne at one time rather specialised, I was otherwise innocent of all knowledge of the art of engineering.
