Comparative enzyme patterns in Thamnidium elegans and T. anomalum.

Mycelial extracts from five isolates of Thamnidium elegans and two isolates of T. anomalum were examined by starch gel zymography for ten different enzyme activities. Although enzyme patterns were found to be essentially identical for all isolates within a species, marked interspecific differences were observed. These findings provide additional insight into the nature of interand intraspecific genetic relationships among fungi. Further, their agreement with the current separation of these species suggests that starch gel zymography can provide the mycologist with new and more quantitative taxonomic criteria.
