Present day environmental concerns are driving the international community toward developing low-emission (hybrid electric) and zero-emission (electric) vehicles to replace conventional internal combustion engine vehicles. This has made the Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) technology to emerge as a promising technology that uses electricity to displace petroleum consumption in the vehicle fleet. This review presents, the advancements that have happened in PHEV diesel hybrid technology in recent years, including vehicle architecture, energy management systems, drivetrain component function and grid connections and their corresponding comparison of all the available technology systems is also made to improve the economics.
