An FSK Transceiver for USB Power Delivery in 0.14-μm CMOS Technology

The USB Power delivery standard does the power negotiation through a type-C transceiver. The first generation of the standard was based on BFSK modulation, a 300+/-10% kbps signal with a 23.2 MHz carrier frequency and with +/-0.5 MHz deviation shapes the BPSK information. A Sallen-Key band-pass (BP) filter removes the out of band noise and a PLL based demodulator with auxiliary charge pump demodulates the FSK signal to achieve a BER> 10−6, The transmitter modulates the 0/1 stream of the digital PHY using a VCO based modulator to deliver a 31 dB SNR FSK signal to a 50 Ohm load on VBUS line. This meets the required spectrum mask and frequency transition curve to comply with the PD standard.
