An empirical investigation and analysis of the current state of information systems evolution

Abstract Information systems evolve in terms of computer hardware and software technology and system performance. These two dimensions can be conceptualized in terms of a matrix, which can then be used to investigate and analyze the current state of information systems development. This article reports the results of a study of over 150 large organizations which operate computer-based information systems.
