1974년 현대조선 노동자 ‘폭동’의 연구

This paper focuses on the 'labor riot' at the Hyundai Shipyard in 1974. The two main aims of this paper are as follows: First, based on newly collected materials and oral testimonies of the participants, this paper tries to reconstruct the incident, which has been relatively unknown or mis-understood; Second, this paper also analyzes the dynamics of a 'violent collective action' in a giant shipyard. Reconstruction of the violent strike shows that the riot was much more complex in its causes, process, and participant interests than previously understood. This analysis on the process of transition from simple protest behavior to a huge and extremely violent riot gives us a chance to review previous studies and theories on riots and collective violence. It also provides a rare chance to examine the life-worlds of male workers in the heavy industries of the 1970s, and reveals that their quiescency and violent eruption are two sides of a coin.
