A Review of the Design and Performance of Tanks Relevant to Flatfish Culture

Abstract The most promising designs of tanks suitable for turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) culture are reviewed and relevant biological, hydrodynamic and water quality criteria are identified. Designs used for a range of other species are included where appropriate, because they have contributed to the development of tank technology. Large, carefully managed, shallow, circular tanks, with multiple inlets, a slightly sloping bottom and an even flow distribution, appear in the literature, to be most suitable.
