The most important system in any Check Point FireWall-1 configuration is the management server, renamed SmartCenter Server in FP3. Every FireWall-1 design has a management server. The management server is the server that connects the SMART Client software in order to manage one or many enforcement points, depending on configuration and licensing. This server handles major functions of the firewall enforcement point, provides the connectivity and data for all SMART Client connections, and stores enforcement point logs, enforcement point configuration, and all other aspects of the firewall architecture. Therefore, maintaining the management server is an important task. Check Point provides the ability to have multiple and highly available management servers in any environment. The chapter discusses the functioning and processing of these servers. FP3 adds new and modified functionality for SMART Clients. In either kind of configuration, standalone or distributed, the management server is a distinct component from both the enforcement point (the firewall) and the SMART Client. The SmartCenter management server is the cornerstone of a Check Point NG installation. The SMART Clients have added functionality in FP3 to assist in the day-to-day operation and management for the Check Point environment.
