Inhibition of the oxidation of carboncarbon composite by boron oxide

Abstract The inhibition of the oxidation reaction of a carbon-carbon composite by boron oxide has been investigated. Various amounts of inhibitor have been deposited on the carbon using the impregnation technique. For small inhibitor contents, the decrease in oxidation rate is essentially due to the blockage of active sites. By increasing the amount of boron oxide, a mobile diffusion barrier for oxygen is formed. This protection layer significantly contributes to the inhibition effect.
