Next-Generation Automated Cognitive Skill Training: Problems, Goals, and Approaches.

Abstract : Research efforts toward the next generation of training systems should have two goals. First, training should achieve significant improvements in speed and quality of skill acquisition. Second, development and production of computer-based training systems should advance beyond the current hand-crafting approach by devising both methodologies and tools that make it possible for a large number of developers to engineer many different high quality training systems. This paper focuses on two key problems that currently confront the computer-based cognitive skills training community: the needs for (1) strong models of cognitive skill acquisition that prescribe what students should learn and how they should learn it and (2) robust engineering methodologies that can support the rapid, widespread development of effective computer-based training for cognitive skills.
