Some aspects of storage and bulk queueing systems in transport operations

This paper deals with the storage of unit loads and break‐bulk cargo within transport systems or, more precisely, within public and port storage locations as queueing systems with bulk arrivals and a single service. The bulk arrivals are represented by groups of unit loads as homogeneous units, these being pallets, containers, boxes, cases, bales, bags, slabs, ingots, etc. The service is performed by the storage facilities with forklifts, tractors, cranes, lifts, etc. An analytical methodology for the design of storage operations is developed using the determination of the mean service position of a unit load within the arrival group in the queue for the storage service.
