Persistent Shadows of the Holocaust: The Meaning to Those not Directly Affected

This book is the record of a conference held in Jerusalem at Hebrew University's Sigmund Freud Center: The book draws its title from that of the confrence. "The aim of the book," the introduction by Moses states, "is to discuss the effect which the event of the Holocaust, from the Nazi accession to power in 1933 until the end of World War II in 1945, has had upon both the unconscious and the conscious parts of the psyche of all of us who have been neither direct victims nor perpetrators. We are attempting to deal with the significance that this historical event had on people unconnected with these events and perhaps on humanity, as it is reflected in conscious and unconscious material which we encounter in our patients and in ourselves. In this way I hope that we are able to arrive at some view of the impact of the Holocaust, its permanent effect on the world." No small goals there!
