Numerical simulation techniques for HMA rutting under loaded wheel tester

A computational simulation tool for the asphalt pavement analyzer (APA) was developed to predict the rutting depth for different types of hot mix asphalt (HMAs). The computer code APA includes a comprehensive multimechanism, viscoelastoplastic material model, developed originally by Saleeb and his associates, which was incorporated into the ABAQUS FEM code to capture the time-dependent behavior of the asphaltic concrete in three-dimensional boundary value problems. The material model parameters necessary for input in the FEM simulation was also described. The techniques for extracting the material model parameters from APA test results were also developed. The FEM parametric sensitivity study results have yielded the proposed two-dimensional approximate approach. The APA test results for three types of HMA were used to demonstrate the capability of the presented model in capturing the complex phenomena in APA test configuration. The developed computational algorithm will be very useful to derive theoretical “transfer functions” for linking the APA test data and site and material specific field pavement rutting performance.
