The influence of mechanical strain magnitude on bone adaptation to porous-coated implants

In order to investigate the hypothesis that trabecular bone tissue adapts its structure according to its mechanical strain magnitude, voxel-based FEA was used to model the interface mechanics of a hydraulically-loaded implant experiment. Although the applied loads produced a wide range of tissue strain levels, the loads were insufficient for preventing the long-term bone atrophy observed in unloaded bones. These results suggest that bone remodeling processes are influenced by other factors besides strain magnitude.
