Workplace Incivility and Job Satisfaction: Mediating Role of Emotion Management

Workplaceincivilityiscommoninorganizationsacrosstheworldandcanhavenegativeeffectson individualsandorganizations.Thepurposeofthereportedstudyistoexaminetheeffectsofsupervisor andcoworkerincivilityonjobsatisfactionandexaminesemotionmanagementasamediatorofthese relationships.Datafrom268workingadultswerecollectedbysurveybatteryandanalyzedviaa numberofmultivariatetechniques.Themodelwassupportedinthatbothsupervisorandcoworker incivilityhadstrongdirectnegativeeffectsonemotionmanagementandjobsatisfaction,andemotion management partially mediated the incivility-job satisfaction relationship. With supervisor and coworkerincivility,theparticipantsreportedlowerlevelsofjobsatisfaction.However,theparticipants’ emotionmanagementmitigated thenegativeeffectof incivilityon jobsatisfactionpartially.The findingssuggestthatorganizationsneedtobeawareoftheunfavorableconsequencesofincivility. Organizationsneedtodiscoverwaystoreduceincivilityandimplementeffortstohelpemployees develop positive emotional management strategies.
