AFDX based avionic data bus architecture design and analysis

The communication between various on-board systems is paramount important for the concept of fly-by-wire, the issues of safety-critical applications, component interaction, which is on the forefront of modern airborne applications. Avionics Full Duplex Switched Ethernet (AFDX) responses this challenge as a bus standard based on the Ethernet protocol and has gained recognition and widespread uses in large commercial aircraft. AFDX addresses quality of service, determinism, and reliability required in an aircraft environment, and at the same time provides the advantages in wiring bundles and the communication bandwidth, increasing network capability, and supporting deterministic requirement of the airborne system and certification guidelines system. AFDX is an implementation of the ARINC 664 Part 7 standard, which uses Ethernet hardware media, but the protocol is fundamentally different from the IEEE802.3 Ethernet in that it provides reliable time determinism, bounded latency, guaranteed bandwidth, and fault tolerance suitable for flight safety-critical applications.
