Characterisation and classification of Chinese male office workers’ necks using 3-D body measurements

ABSTRACT This paper aims to characterise and classify the necks of Chinese male office workers with a goal to provide a reference for men’s clothing design, particularly collar design. Two hundred Chinese male office workers aged 25–30 were recruited for this study. The neck data of the participants were extracted using three-dimensional anthropometry. Descriptive analysis and cluster analysis were conducted to characterise and classify the necks of the target market segment. Four unique types of necks were identified as a result of the cluster analysis. Neck inclination, as well as neck girth, plays a significant role in the neck classification. In addition to the current collar sizing parameter – neck girth, this study suggested the important role of neck inclination in the classification of Chinese male office workers’ necks.
