Poly(2,5-heteroarylene vinylene) from a precursor polymer soluble in organic solvents

The preparation of poly(2,5-thienylene vinylene) and poly(2,5-furanylene vinylene) through precursor polymers soluble in organic solvents is described. Thin, precursor polymer films, obtained by casting from CHCl3 solutions, were converted to the conjugated polymers by heat treatment. The sequence of reactions is described. The new methoxy precursor polymers have been characterised by IR and 13C NMR, while GPC measurements were performed in order to investigate degrees of polymerisation. Optical spectra and IR analysis revealed some premature elimination.
