Influence of electronic-based loads on unwanted islanding

Loads have an important impact on the behavior of an islanded grid, yet they remain the main unknowns of the system. Electronic-based loads — like rectifiers in particular — are rarely studied in the context of unintentional islanding studies, in spite of the fact that the rate of electronic loads has strongly increased in the last decades. In this paper, the impact of electronic loads on islanding detection is studied and the effect of such loads on the Non-Detection Zone (NDZ) diagram of a passive protection is discussed. Uncommon behaviors, specific to electronic-based loads, are observed and analyzed.
