Crashworthy systems: a paradigm shift in road design (part II)

A study demonstrating the lack of fundamental understanding in crashworthiness within the road system of Australia by designers, resulting in unnecessary fatalities and some of the solutions that provide a more acceptable approach is illustrated. Compatibility between the vehicle and the road environment in which it operates is critical to maximizing safety of the road system and a holistic crashworthy system approach should be used, which considers a vehicle's crashworthiness in conjunction with the road environment and other road users.
