Transcoding Rate Optimization for Streaming to Mobile Clients

We address the issue of streaming to mobile clients in P2P multimedia system with transcoding technique. Our study is based on the environment of hybrid P2P network, which includes fixed clients and mobile clients in the same system. Fixed clients refer to PC or IPTV connected to the overlay network over a reliable connection and had powerful computing capability to transcode video data into the formats for mobile clients. And oppositely, mobile clients are seen as no transcoding capability, but just transmit transcoded data. In this paper, we propose a model of streaming system with transcoding technique in hybrid P2P network. Based on this model, we give an algorithm to choose the proper transcoding rate sent to mobile clients. The main goal of our design is to increase the video quality and the utilization of bandwidth resource. We compare the performances of P2P streaming system using the proposed algorithm with current designs in the simulation experiment. The results show that, compared to the existing designs, the system implementing our algorithm, the better video quality in mobile clients and higher availability of bandwidth resources can be achieved.
