Motion sickness occurs in a wide range of environments such as ships, airplanes, cars, trains, cinemas and virtual-reality devices. It brings unpleasant feelings with various symptoms like cold sweating, headache, discomfort, nausea and vomiting. Although the exact mechanism of motion sickness is unclear sensory conflict theory is considered to be persuasive which claims that conflicing information to the central nervous system by the motion and orientation senses stimulate the motion sickness. It has been studied since early 20th century especially in train, airplane and ship industries because it is directly related with the comfort of crews and passengers. Recently two-island type design is widely used for the large containerships and motion sickness is considered importantly to decide the location of accommodation. Vertical acceleration in the frequency range of 0.1 Hz ~ 0.5 Hz is known as dominant source of motion sickness and it tends to increase as the accommodation moves forward. In this research quantitative assessment of probability of motion sickness according to location of accommodation was carried out with RAO(response amplitude operator) of 14k containership.
